Discovery of the bog Body

The bog Body of Bernuthsfeld (near Aurich) was discovered on May 24,1907 by the brothers de Jonge, peat cutters from Tannenhausen. Aurich`s National archivist, Dr.Wachter secured the find and examined the excavation site. Not only the man`s skeleton and hair were found, but also clothes, leather straps and a knife sheath.

The Bernuthsfeld bog Body

This is the Body of a man aged no more than thirty from the 8th century AD who was killed by a blow to the head. People who had died a violent death were often buried in the peat. The population feared the souls of these dead people who, it was thought, would not find peace.
